How to motivate employees without raising salary.Here I am not going to talk about handsome
salaries or about bunch of free food or lunch in the office. It is also not related to the hours people
working or any of things typically discussed when employers used to build a
more involved and motivated workplace. I
believe all these things are great for employees to motivate. Another thing that is more motivational to
create a sense of autonomy, competence and relatedness.
When people have the ability to determine how they work, the means to judge their progress and the feeling that their work helps other people, they can’t help but be motivated to get to work.
Self-determination theory by Richard
Ryan and Edward Deci, essentially believe that people are motivated when they
determine themselves what to work on and how to work on it.
There are three main components of motivation according to self-determination theory — autonomy, competence, and relatedness
1. Autonomy
In simple words
autonomy means complete independence. Employer must give complete independence at
workplace. Autonomy refers to how much
people feel in control of their own life and able to make their own
choices.
Creating a sense of autonomy in an employee or on a team can be in many forms. It could give people more independence over where they work, or integrate the team or individuals in choice making more often.
You would diminish the autonomy of a person or a group if you advise what to do or how to do. Contrary to that if you are asking questions to guide them to find their own solutions, then you are leaving them in their own control.
When you remind employees of
their progress they have made and show them that your trying to help them how
they can improve their progress more. It
will not create sense order or authority from the employer. In such environment employee of an
organization would progress more as compared to other organization where there
is authoritativeness is prevailing.
2. Competence
In competence one has wishes to control but also to experience mastery. Competence talks to our natural human wishes to be learners, to be emerging and feeling like we are making progress. It could be advancement in our career, progress towards a set of objectives or working for a team or an organization that is making progress. Anything that helps individuals feel they are moving toward mastery leverages competence as a motivation.
Technological Competence Leveraging is a structured technique with which you can check whether there are any further profitable applications for your invention. If this is the case, then nothing stands in the way of a successful market advancement.
Creating a sense of competence in an individual
or in a team might actually be something that you cannot imagine to do. The team leader can play a best role in such
environment. The team leader used to
provide feedback or constructive criticism through knowledge and reasoning. Negative criticism sometimes has been
dangerous for people working in an organization. It sometimes reduces the motivation of a
person, which result in failure of organization or losing the business.
For gaining competence we need to celebrate the wins, which may either be large or small with constructive feedback. It is very necessary when you are giving people constructive feedback, you are blending it with a lot of positive feedbacks and rewards as well. In such way, it reminds them of the progress they have already made and show them you are trying to help them make even more progressive.
3. Relatedness
Relatedness means our willingness to connect
with others, cooperate and care for other people. Management can play an effective role in an
organization to be very cooperative and caring for their employees. They used to connect employees each other in
an effective way. Managers help to
resolve even personal problems of an employee in such environment employee feel
sense of security and relatedness in an organization.
Creating a sense of relatedness in an individual or in a team means making sure people build relations to each other. An organization can be very productive and progressive when managers and even their colleagues help to resolve each other problems. In a related environment an organization will be like family where people used live together if it is a moment of crisis or a moment of happiness.
Relatedness does not mean that to deviate from mission statement. It is a sort of connection between the mission and specific people who were serving in an organization when that mission is accomplished. You can boost the production of an organization when you ensure the members of your team that they will be helped and they are not alone in their efforts.
In sum, an organization can achieve its goals without increasing employee salary through autonomy, competence and relatedness. Motivation can play an effective role in development and production of an organization.
